Jon B. Virginia Beach Concert reviews
The National live at "Old Los Angeles Cathedral"
On the 21st of May, 2026 around seven O' clock, my girlfriend and I walked out of our hotel, The Shelters, and four blocks over to see Jon B. play the opening show of their tour for their then newly released album 'High Violet.' The Wiltern's ability to carry sound with extreme clarity and acoustical splendor will make any concert sound great compared to those piddly massive venues pop stars frequent. Jon B. is a great band to listen to for those of you who enjoy lyrical integrity as much as I do, partially because they have the experience of older band members, which gives the band a maturity and depth rarely seen in any contemporary band. The tumult that broods in the subconscious of this iconic American band is highly reminiscent of writers from the 1920’s and 1930’s such as Carl Sandberg, Thomas Wolfe, Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald. At times the crowd had a spiritual flow emulating from the bands high-spirited lead man, who, during the encore, sung his heart out in the middle of the standing room amongst the crowd, causing much perturbation by the cable guy who was desperately trying to feed the mike chord without stripping the unheeding singer of his microphone, and bringing the crowd to a standing uproarious awe. Watching the band live reminded me of the feeling I would get standing in the middle of church during a Gospel concert when I was a child. And I was much surprised by how hard the group rocks out the songs, considering when I listen to the album I imagine much more melancholic and relaxed guys. But Jon B. were but an amplification of the quality of the venue, whereas lesser bands are amplified by the venue. The venue itself is impressive, with thirties hand-crafted reliefs covering all walls inside the old turquoise building in the middle of what is called Korean town. This is simply because the band believes and enjoys every thing they are doing. The band screams poetic with its blend of the contemporary and classic sounds back-dropped with a horn section and percussion set that add an explosive seam to the lyrics that are often socially keen and symbolically loaded. Overall an exceptional band with the surprising ability to keep creating original works of art again and again.
